Goals from striking duo El-Hadji Diouf and Milan Baros, plus an unfortunate own goal, saw Liverpool through to the last sixteen.

And Houllier has praised his battling Reds, despite the fact it was an unfamiliar lineup.

He said: "I was delighted with the comeback of Markus Babbel alongside the performance of Igor Biscan.

"When you are looking back at the game you have to remember that a lot of the players hadn't played together for a long time - in fact some of them had never played together.

"I thought the first 20 minutes were a bit edgy for us but gradually we got into the game. Maybe we were a bit lucky to score the goal just before half-time because it was a very even first half but in the second half we were better. We were very committed."
