Houllier: Our season has been a success

The Anfield supremo believes that Liverpool will have 'done well' even if they fail to claim a Champions League spot. Houllier also admits that the Reds are still 'two or three years behind Man United at the moment' - a fact which should make Liverpool fans even more please with the club's Worthington Cup success this term.

Houllier said: "A season cannot be disappointing when you win a major trophy and beat Manchester United in the final.

"It's not as if we've been in the middle of the league all season. We have done well. We've just been unfortunate at times in some games and unfortunate that some key players haven't been firing on all cylinders."

"No matter how many players you buy or how much you spend in the transfer market, you can only play eleven players. It's about being creative when you make new signings.

"We are a young team with an average age of just 25 and yet we were only ten or twelve points off competing for the title.

"We are probably two or three years behind Man United at the moment and that is why our Worthington Cup win over them shouldn't be overlooked. In fact it should be enhanced."
