Heskey picked up a knock whlst playing for England against Slovakia, missing Saturday's 1-0 victory at Leeds United.

But as yet there is no guarentee that Heskey will be fit to play against Spartak, with Houllier only going as far as to say that Heskey has a 'chance' of playing.

"Emile has a chance. He's important to us and we will see how he goes in training. But there is a strong hope that he will be fit.

"He can play several positions upfront and sacrifice himself for the team. You win things when you have players of the calibre of Emile Heskey.

"Not just because of his football quality but also the mental attitude. Wherever Emile plays, he delivers.

"I signed Emile because of these qualities. He's a diamond of a player, he embodies all the right qualities of a professional footballer.

'He's very hard working, sacrifices himself for the team. He's always decisive because he's so strong.

"The real embarrassment is when you only have one striker and the rest are all unfit.

'The embarrassment is when you have a problem finding a line-up, but everyone is fit and okay. The four strikers are putting in a lot of effort to delivery and bring out the best of themselves."

Houllier also confirmed that midfielder Steven Gerrard misses out after failing to adequately recover from a hip injury, also sustained playing for England.

"Steven has not travelled with us."
