The England forward, who scored his 22nd goal of the season in the 3-1 win over Leeds, admits that the form of other top sides is making the Reds task even more difficult.

Owen said:"It was an important victory. The top teams are keeping up the pace, making it difficult to get into the Champions League places.

"We know we've got to go about our business, and we did. We had a bad five minutes before half time when we gave them (Leeds) a lifeline because we should have killed them off before that.

"It was important to get the third through Stevie and that effectively killed the game again. But the performance of the team was good, apart from that spell just before half time."
