Although his signing may limit the first team chances of Pongolle, the Frenchman is happy to see Morientes at Anfield, saying that playing alongside him and watching him in training will be beneficial to his own progress as a player.

Pongolle said: "I am very happy he is here because I am sure I will become a much, much better player working with him every day. I am still confident about myself as well and I will keep working hard, keep the right mentality and look to show the boss he can trust me if he needs me.

"Morientes is a great player and I can learn so much from him. He is exceptional. His movement is good, he's a good communicator on the field, he works well with the other strikers and his scoring record is fabulous. He's looked very good in training so far and has been showing his skills.

"I know him being here means I might not play as much but that is a situation I accept. I am still only 20 and have a lot to learn. And when you are given the chance to learn from someone like Morientes then you have to be happy.

"I have spoken to him in French a few times and I know he is very happy to be here. What else can you say apart from the fact that he's Fernando Morientes? That says everything. He's a top, top player and it's great that he has signed for us."
