The midfielder joined Liverpool from the Serie A club in 2009 but has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and has since been loaned out to Juventus and AC Milan.
“I could’ve gone back to Roma last year and I would’ve gladly taken a pay cut for my club colours,” he said, as the two clubs prepare for Wednesday night's friendly in Boston.
“Facing the Giallorossi is always a strong emotion for me. I have already played against Roma four times between Juve and Milan, but it’ll be a little strange doing so wearing a Liverpool jersey.”
