The Liverpool winger has failed to impress since his £20m move from Aston Villa in July 2011 and a loan move back to his hometown club with a view to a permanent move in summer may be the best option.
The deadline for loan moves is this Thursday if Boro boss Tony Mowbray wants to bring in the 28-year-old.
