The Echo can reveal the content of the previously unseen documents will be made public by the Hillsborough Independent Panel on September 12 – in Liverpool.

It is understood there are millions of papers relating to the death of 96 Liverpool FC football fans at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Sheffield’s Hillsborough stadium.

Exactly how the files will be released is still being agreed by the independent panel set up by the Home Office to oversee the disclosure.

But it is understood the relatives of the Hillsborough victims will be given access to the material before the documents are released to the public later in the day.

A statement from the Hillsborough Independent Panel released today said: “We are now approaching the completion of its work of securing maximum possible disclosure of documents relating to the disaster and its aftermath.

“Disclosure, as it has been made clear, will be first to the Hillsborough families and then to the wider public.

“At the same time the panel will publish its report explaining how the disclosed documents add to public understanding.

“The panel hopes that by making this announcement it will give the bereaved families sufficient time to prepare for the disclosure."
