Icelandic boss says Gylfi is the man to re-light Liverpool's fire

Gylfi Sigurdsson is the player to re-ignite Liverpool’s Premier League fire.

That’s the verdict of the Iceland star delivered by his international team boss Lars Lagerback.

Brendan Rodgers is desperate to bolster his creative options at Anfield. He tried to sign Sigurdsson for Swansea after the Icelandic midfielder had enjoyed a terrific loan spell there last season.

But Rodgers’ switch to Anfield three weeks ago – and the fact Swansea hadn’t completed a club record £7million deal with Hoffenheim – has allowed the new Liverpool boss to try to persuade the 22-year-old to join him at Anfield.

And the implications of putting Sigurdsson alongside players such as Liverpool and England skipper Steven Gerrard are immense.

Lagerback said: “Gylfi had a fantastic season with Swansea and he has great quality.

“I was really impressed with what he did with Swansea and the way they played really suited him.

“He’s a fantastic player at linking play around him and together with the players in his team.

“If he has some good players around him, then I think he’s an absolutely top player – but he does need to be surrounded by quality.

“If that happens, then I think he could be a really world-class player in the right environment.”
