The game started perfectly for the Reds, with Maxi Rodriguez netting two early goals, but the game turned when Alexander Doni was red-carded for pulling down a Blackborn forward. Substitute keeper Brad Jones saved the penalty, but the home side pulled a goal back before half time through Yakubu.
A second penalty, this time not saved by Jones, gifted Blackburn an equaliser and it looked to be heading for a draw until Andy Carroll's diving header in injury time.
