"The performance, from 20 minutes before the interval to the end of the game, I thought they were excellent," he said after the game.

"They showed a great deal of determination and commitment and didn't want to lose the game. They pushed forward and kept plugging away and at the end of the day we could feel a little hard done by.We were delighted with the players.

"I don't think there may have been a penalty. I think when the referee describes his reason for not giving it I think the player who committed it was unlucky. So we're up against it there aren't we?

"If you hit the post it doesn't count as on target. Even the goal we scored came off the post and Luis headed it in. Agger had a great header that hit the post, Bellamy hit the post. We'll just keep going, we'll get closer."
