Kenny praises magnificent effort

"It's a fantastic week for the players," he said. "Everybody realises the history and tradition of the football club and they want to be a part of that history and tradition.

"With the effort and commitment they put in there they are certainly going in the right direction. It was a magnificent effort.

"After the game on Wednesday which was a really difficult game, to come back and play on Saturday morning was a wee bit unkind to them, but they showed tremendous commitment and great heart.

"They might have been the better side and had more possession, but apart from hitting the post and the goal they scored I don't think Pepe had much to do, so we just hung on in there and Dirk Kuyt gets his 50th goal for the club against Manchester United and won the game for us, so we're delighted."

Dalglish was also delighted with the input of Andy Carroll, despite the striker not getting on the scoresheet.

"Everybody knows Andy's prowess in the air. We'll try our best to develop that further and we'll also be patient with him.

"No disrespect to Newcastle but he came from playing a different style to what he's used to here. He was injured when he came in at first. But his commitment has been superb and as long as he's got the right attitude and commitment then we've got a chance of working with him.

"We've got our reward for a great performance on Wednesday by getting through to the League Cup final, and we've got a reward for this, but we won't get carried away.

"I think both sets of supporters were magnificent and well-behaved and great adverts for their respective clubs. There's always a bit of banter which is brilliant between Liverpool and Man U fans and that's the way it should be.

"There's friendly banter and both sets of players on the pitch just wanted to play football, which is great credit to everybody involved with both clubs."
