Yet those memorable celebrations following their dramatic Carling Cup final victory over Cardiff City were short and sweet.

The international break meant no fewer than 13 of Kenny Dalglish’s men headed straight off to various outposts across Europe.

There was little opportunity to savour what was a hugely significant afternoon in the club’s illustrious history as a silverware drought stretching back six years was ended.

Now they have been reunited, Dalglish is keen to ensure his players look forward rather than back.

The manager’s new-look Reds may have something tangible to show for their efforts since August but the Scot wants more.

Winning the Carling Cup brought with it a guaranteed Europa League spot but since the start of the campaign Liverpool’s sights have been set on a bigger prize.

Two years outside Europe’s elite has been two years too long. Both in terms of prestige and finance, the Champions League is where the Reds need to be competing.

And if they are going to achieve that, there is little margin for error with 13 league games remaining.
