Rodgers: I feel for the players

Last updated : 08 November 2012 By Adam Bryant

"I feel for the players tonight because they were outstanding," he said after the game. " In the first half we were tactically terrific for the first 44 minutes and 50 seconds then just switched off and made a mistake right at the end of the half.

"The second half was more of the same really. The game opened up a wee bit towards the end. They had a couple of chances when we were going after the game and try to get back into it.

"I'm very proud of the players. Conor Coady came in and was outstanding in his first start. He played against top players and Jon Flanagan played his first game for a long time.

"So it was a terrific team performance, good quality on a difficult pitch, created chances and at this level you get punished when you make mistakes and that was the only sadness to the game.

"Tonight was a much-changed team but we still deserved something from the game. We just need to be clinical and that's something we need to improve going forward, but I've no complaints.

"There were a lot of young players tonight and the senior players were terrific. Jamie Carragher and those guys performed admirably for us and its a great learning curve for these young players.

"Unfortunately we didn't get the result. We're at home next week and hope to get the result then."
