Rodgers: We were brilliant

"We were brilliant to be fair," he said after the game. "We were so clinical.

"It was a terrific start for us. We were really aggressive and our pressing was very good. Obviously, to get that early goal really helped.

"It was a difficult header to be honest. The ball came in and Dan timed his run perfectly, stays onside and makes the goal. Once you get the first goal that gives you confidence.

"We talked during the week about our penetration. We've got some wonderful technicians but we've also got real good pace and youthfulness in the side.

"Coutinho can play in a couple of positions but he's a master technician. He passes, he slides the ball in, he can lift it over people and was unfortunate not to get a goal himself after a wonderful move.

"Across the board for us it was important to get a clean sheet aswell. You come to St James Park to score six goals but keep the clean sheet aswell which is very important for us.

"It's been a very, very difficult week and it was a real test for us all. But you've seen the concentration and the focus today and backed by a wonderful support, you could hear them through the game.

"Luis has been brilliant for us this season, but we can only move forward with the players we have and they were outstanding for us today.

"People may have thought we're comimg here with nothing to play for, but when you play and work for a club like Liverpool every game is so important and for us its about finishing the season as strong as we can and go into next season with good momentum."
