Since his hip operation in May the Liverpool striker has spent much of the summer on a rehabilitation programme in the United States.
He returned to Melwood for individual sessions last month and is now back in training with the rest of the first-team squad.
But Rodgers has been cautious and it is unlikely Sturridge will feature at Old Trafford, although a place on the bench is now a strong possibility.
