The Uruguayan hit two more – the second heavily deflected off Joey O’Brien – to register 11 goals in his last four home games as Brendan Rodgers’ side secured a 4-1 win over West Ham United.

Guy Demel and James Collins also struck past their own keeper either side of half-time to help the Merseyside cause.

Martin Skrtel repeated the trick for the home side when he directed Matt Jarvis’ header past Jaaskelainen to revive West Ham’s hopes midway through the second half, but at times Liverpool’s attacking was mesmerising.

Liverpool’s victory was soured only by an injury to Steven Gerrard, pulling up early in the second half with a pulled muscle, while Kevin Nolan was sent off for West Ham eight minutes from time for an ugly kick on Jordan Henderson.
