A New Chapter

Roy Hodgson has come in and brought a sense of calm and optimism to the squad and the supporters. The takeover will look after itself, and the fans will have to hope that the right and appropriate buyer will be chosen. Just tonight the board have stated that they have reviewed a number of proposed bids, as the saying goes 'all in good time'.

The Premier League season is upon us and the Reds start the campaign at home to Arsenal, a far cry away from last season's dismal opener at Spurs. New players and new hope springs eternal, with the boost that Captain Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are to stay at Anfield. Hodgson managed to persuade the stars to stay put, however it looks like Javier Mascherano will leave at some stage in the next couple of weeks, where though we do not know.

As Rafael Benitez departed the club, many were sceptical at the appointment of the former Fulham boss. It is clear that Liverpool rivals his managerial days at Inter Milan in terms of stature, some will argue that Liverpool is his biggest challenge.

The first job Hodgson had was to stabilise the playing staff. He did this and produced one of Liverpool's finest signings over the past couple of years, prising Joe Cole away from the Capital. The former Chelsea man has a new lease of life under Hodgson, and has a fanatical fans base that will back him to the hilt. Cole's been there and done it, he's won the Premier League, that experience is invaluable and something that can rub off onto the other players. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will have been wooed by his arrival, it takes some of the pressure off of their shoulders, and it gives the Kop another hero.

Accompanying Cole into Melwood was Serbian striker Milan Jovanovic who arrived on a free transfer from Standard Liege. Scoring a couple of goals at the World Cup gave the Liverpool fans a glimpse of the pedigree he would bring, bolstering the forward line. Much was discussed before Jovanovic arrived in Liverpool, with some reports suggesting that he may follow Benitez to Inter Milan, fortunately for the Reds he stuck to his guns and opted for Merseyside. He has since shown his quality in pre-season, linking up well with Joe Cole in the Europa League tie against Rabotnicki.

Quickly to follow the pair into the club was Young Scottish Player of the Year Danny Wilson from Rangers. One for the future, but he is a player with ambitions to be knocking on the door of the first team as soon as possible. Jonjo Shelvey has also joined from Charlton Athletic, the enigmatic midfielder's been heavily involved in the pre-season programme, once again lots is expected from the youngster.

Then there was a slight surprise in the transfer dealings, when Liverpool 'resigned' Fabio Aurelio. The left-back decided to call it a day after Rafael Benitez left Anfield. Roy Hodgson's given the Brazilian second chance, it is one he has to take, but more importantly he will be no good to Liverpool if he is out injured. He had a cracking season in 2008-09; a return to that sort of form will certainly please the Anfield faithful.

Roy Hodgson then decided to become reunited with a player from his FC Copenhagen days. Christian Poulsen signed from Juventus on Thursday seemingly to become Mascherano's replacement. The 30 year old has signed a three years contract and expressed his desire to perform and prove himself in the Premier League, music to the ears of Liverpool fans.

In fairness Roy Hodgson has added some good additions to the Liverpool team, however to challenge Liverpool will need extra fire power in attack. Fernando Torres must be given time to get back to his best, no matter how long it takes. He needs to be eased back into action after pulling up injured in the World Cup final. If not for Torres' benefit, but for the team's as well, the Reds need to have options in games. For too long they have relied on the same players to get them out of trouble. Roy Hodgson must recognise this; a few more signings are needed if we are to prove that one day soon, we are capable of challenging for the title.
