A Successful Window of Opportunity

Some clubs are historically more active than others. Harry Redknapp is in his element, with his driver's window permanently wound down like a kerb crawler, always ready to give the media a soundbite or two. Sir Alex plays it differently, behind closed doors and away from the prying eyes of the press.

In recent years Liverpool have played the transfer window game badly, sometimes naively and sometimes through no fault of their own. Who can forget the Alonso/Barry fiasco? Or Torres/Carroll? Liverpool's failure to sign Clint Dempsey in the summer has cost us dearly and one of the main reasons we are languishing outside the top four.

Fortunately the club were better organised in January. Our five-month wait for a striker was over as we took little time to sign Daniel Sturridge. Two days into the window and Rodgers got his man. No last-minute bartering or price hikes, it was a done deal for a reasonable fee. Not only that, but we were able to play him through the month of January. Our second signing, Philippe Countinho, took a little longer but was also completed smoothly.

There were no surprise departures either. No star striker deciding to head south on the last day. Dani Pacheco was allowed to go back to Spain on loan, while Doni has been released and will return to Brazil.

You could also argue that we have two more new players in the dressing room, after Rodgers' kick up the backsides for Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing spurred them on to improve their game so much that both are now essential members of the first team squad. Henderson in particular has turned his season around so much that he is one of the reasons for the club's recent run of good form.

All in all it was good business for Liverpool Football Club and a stress-free month for the fans. Let's hope for the same in the summer...
