Former Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso will retire from football at the end of the season.

He took to Twitter to confirm the news...

The 35-year old Spanish midfielder was brought in by Rafa Benitez in 2004 and played an integral part in Liverpool's Champions League winning campaign of 2005.

He moved onto Real Madrid in 2009 then Bayern Munich in 2014.

"I've experienced so much as a player with Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich," Alonso said. "They are all great clubs. And of course, with the Spanish national team. I never would've thought I'd have such a great career, and I hope there's more to come before it ends."

Alonso will be fondly remembered for his knack of scoring from his own half, which he managed on two occasions for Liverpool - against Luton and Newcastle...
