Anfield Stewards

I thanked him for the stewards giving up their time for no pay that day. All stewards donated their pay to charity (I think to either the HJC or HFSG). I also thanked him for the job they do throughout the season and told him that most fans appreciated what they did and the sometimes onerous task they have.

He told me of one group of fans, pointing towards 202 (certainly in that area), who insisted on standing on seats and chanting "justice" during games. He said that when stewards ask people to refrain from standing on the seats they get all kinds of abuse. He asked, "Where are they today?"

He said that the stewards have no problem with people standing up during games at times like corners, free kicks, when play is at our end etc and can even sometimes put up with fans standing throughout games but that standing on seats and abusing stewards, for whatever reason, was just not on.

I have to say that I largely agree with him, especially on the safety aspect of standing on a plassy seat. I mean, if you fell off and hurt yourself would you go seeking compensation?

Now I'm no sainted angel and have been ejected from Anfield for drinking a can of ale in my seat. I was a knobhead and deserved it. I was also thrown out at Charlton a few seasons back for refusing to sit down and subsequently abusing a steward. Again, knobhead - deserved.

The Head Steward promised that he would pass my comments on to his colleagues. I promised in return to pass his comments on to fans via the Internet Forums. If anybody recognises themselves from any of that I would ask that you give the stewards a break and treat them with the respect they deserve.
