Aye, aye Captain

"Stevie has certain leadership qualities which I spotted very early in his career," said Gerard Houllier after announcing the change. "When he was young, all he needed was time to mature. Now he is 23 and he is ready."

While Sami Hyypia is a strong leader from the back, his occasional dips in form have had an effect on the team as a whole.

"This is not something which should be seen as against Sami," added Houllier.

"He has been a good captain for us. He has lifted six trophies as captain.
"There was no bitterness or resentment and I know Sami will recognise this is a decision I've taken for the team. The main consideration is the team and I'm glad Sami understands that."

Rather than ignoring the issue Houllier has made a very tough decision - in my opinion one which will prove to be perfect as the weeks progress.

Sami's acceptance and understanding of the switch is admirable and now he can focus on regaining his crown as the Premiership's best centre-back.

Meanwhile, Gerrard's new role will develop him not only as a player, but as a leader. It should calm his temper without stifling his aggression, and be the final step on the road to becoming the finest midfielder in the country.

Stevie may wear the armband, but we have three strong leaders in Hyypia, Gerrard and Michael Owen. All areas of the field are covered and the exciting young players coming through will have perfect role models to aspire to.

On hearing the news, Gerrard said "I'm absolutely thrilled. I was captain of my school side and I used to go along to Anfield to watch the team and I always looked up to people like John Barnes who captained the team during the 90s.

"I used to watch Barnes with the captains armband and dream that one day it would be me captaining the team I love.

"I'm looking forward to the responsibility and I think my game has matured since I first made the breakthrough into the first team.

"I want to blossom into a world class player - something I'm not yet - and hopefully captaining Liverpool will help me achieve that ambition."

Congratulations and good luck for the future Stevie!
