Can we do a Leicester?

Claudio Ranieri’s men have overcome all the odds to achieve what we all thought was impossible. Fourteen months ago they were bottom of the league. This time around they have led the pack from start to finish, defying all the football critics and press week by week.

In his first season the ‘Tinkerman’ has given his Foxes squad the belief that they can beat anyone, and they have, and they fully deserve to be champions.

Jurgen Klopp has been Liverpool manager for six months. In that time he has turned around what was likely to be an abysmal season under Brendan Rodgers. The self belief of the players was shot, as was belief in the manager, and tactics were lacking.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager soon had the Liverpool squad playing better football. Out of form players were dropped, youngsters were given opportunities and fortunes were being turned around.

It’s not been a straightforward ride. We’ve had our fair share of disappointing defeats along the way and frailties have been exposed. However, we’ve continued to bounce back stronger and show glimpses of the performances that could win us a Premier League title, if only we could do it week in week out.

Leicester City have shown that its possible to break the monopoly of the big five. Liverpool came close to doing that two years ago, finishing second - two points behind champions Manchester City. There’s absolutely no reason we can’t do that again. We have the manager. We just need to strengthen the squad in a few key areas, ensure the stars of the current squad play to their full potential and gain that same consistency that Ranieri’s men have managed to achieve this year.

Those football critics who have already been left red-faced by Leicester’s achievements this season are now saying it is a one-off and can never be done again. Let’s hope the Foxes do have another great season next year and finish second… behind Liverpool!
