Cry A Tear On Anfield Road

Last updated : 20 April 2004 By Peter Etherington
Cry a tear on Anfield Road
At the Eternal Flame for the young and old
Who went to watch their team away
And didn’t come back on that terrible day.
Cry a tear at the back of the Kop
And cry one at the Justice shop
For 96 lives lost in vain
Who’ll never see the Redmen again.
Cry a tear on the Anfield pitch
But not for the players so pampered and rich.
Cry it for those for whom you laid flowers
In those desperate post-Hillsborough hours.
Cry a tear although you survived
Because you’re still a victim even though you’re alive.
Cry a tear in your mind’s eye
And remember how you didn’t wanna die
Crushed in that crowd hearing dying moans
Thousands around you yet you felt so alone.
Cry a tear because it’s always there
In your thoughts, your dreams and your nightmares.
Cry a tear because you can.
It doesn’t make you any less of a man.
Cry a tear fifteen years hence
For fragile bodies crushed against a steel bar fence.
Cry a tear for a woman battling on
For the justice she craves for the death of her son.
Cry a tear and remember, this is true
Never forget the 96 because it could have been you.

R.I.P. the 96 and anybody else who ever went to play in or watch a football match and didn’t come back.
