Deja Vu

It was generally accepted that the manager would need time. Too much work was required to turn Roy Evans team into Title challengers. However, that manager achieved an awful lot too soon. The result was that expectation amongst the supporters rose to silly proportions. Later that year Liverpool competed in the European Super Cup and won it. Yet at that time many were already showing their discontent and criticising the manager, his signings and tactics.

This discontent grew. Even when the manager became ill and missed more than half the season. Even though that Liverpool team went on to finish 2nd. Even though the total points amassed to reach 2nd would have won the league in most of the previous seasons. And even though the team that finished top played a blinder and went on a post Christmas run which made Liverpool famous back in the 80's.

Despite this the discontent was there. Liverpool had won a Cup Treble the previous season, had beaten Man Utd in the Charity Shield and just beaten the reigning European Champions Bayern Munich in a game where the final result flattered Munich. Yet there was still discontent. There was still people moaning because we werent playing all out attacking Brazilian style football for 90 minutes in every game. This discontent spilled onto the terraces and the players became jittery. Despite this they still managed a very creditable 2nd place.

But the discontent never let up. Eventually certain players and the manager were hounded until the clubs perfomances dipped to such a level that a replacement manager was required.

In 2004 Liverpool won a the European Cup (CL). The new manager had been in charge for a relatively short time and managed to take a team of underachievers and low confidence players to the most prized club trophy in Europe. When he took over it was generally accepted that it would take many years for him to get Liverpool challenging for the Title again. However, the new manager achieved too much too soon. The result was that expectation amongst the supporters rose to silly proportions. At the start of his second season Liverpool competed in the European Super Cup and won it. Yet at that time many were already showing their discontent and criticising the manager, his signings and his tactics.
