Exclusive: Alan Kennedy's View

I was upbeat about the new season. With hte arrival of Harry Kewell, Steve Finnan and the French youngsters we were up for the first game.

After Saturday's results, with Manchester United and Arsenal both winning I felt we had a chance to get a good result against Chelsea but unfortunately it wasn't to be.

We started well and I thought we took the game by the scruff of the neck and showed Chelsea that they couldn't buy the championship.

But overall we lacked cohesion and, although Biscan did his best, Veron and Lampard overshadowed our midfield. Chelsea were good and their defence handled Owen and Heskey well.

Kewell's pace showed Wayne Bridge up at times, which pleased me. He had pace and stamina and was my man of the match.

But Liverpool resorted to the long balls for Owen to chase and Desailly and Terry coped with them too easily.

Diouf did well when he came on, troubling the defence, but there was no final product. We tried to batter them but they remained strong.

In hindsight Anthony Le Tallec may have made a difference. Some say he's too young and inexperienced for such a big game, but I think if you're good enough you're old enough.

I thought Chelsea would struggle to get a pattern to their play, but they were good. Their defence is one of he best and they've got strength in depth with Terry keeping Gallas out of the side. Duff and Gronkjaer were quick and clever on the wings and Veron looked at home in the centre.

We could have possibly deserved a draw, but I believe Chelsea will give United a run for their money this season.
