Go Fourth - The Push For Champions League

Last updated : 18 February 2023 By Adam Bryant

Another win against a top team leaves Liverpool fans still hopeful of claiming that vital top four place in the Premier League.

As with other clubs in the top six, we outplayed Arsenal, were by far the better team on the day and thoroughly deserved the 3-1 win.

Even when the visitors got their goal to make it 2-1, we didn't panic as we have in previous games. We carried on as we were and went on to score a third, thanks to the wonderful goal from Gini Wijnaldum.

It's no secret that Liverpool do play better against teams who are open and wanting to play against us, rather than those that park the bus in the hope of grinding out a point or even better getting a late winner on the counter attack.

We do need to go into those games with a different attitude, turn up the pace, pass the ball around with more urgency and encourage full backs to push forward when in possession. We need more options and quicker decision making in that final third.

Having said that, in hindsight we did play some of those lower teams at a bad time - Swansea, Hull City and Leicester were fired up and out to prove a point after losing their respective managers. But its these games that Man United and Arsenal are claiming wins in and it could well be these games that gets one of them into the top four at the end of the season.

There's no doubt Liverpool have played better football than both United and Arsenal this season and lpaying as well as we do against better teams its quite likely we will do well in the Champions League next season. Let's hope we get the chance to show that!
