Kennedy Exclusive: A new season, a new challenge

I think it was inevitable that Liverpool would bring in a new manager, but I'm pleased that the board and Rick Parry had the conviction to tell Houllier that he had taken the club as far as he could and terminate his contract.

Houllier built the team up but still failed to challenge Arsenal and Chelsea. Fourth-best just isn't good enough.

I have spoken with Rick Parry about Rafael Benitez and he has confidence in the man. He has his heart set on reviving the club's fortunes, but we'll have to see whether he can get more out of the squad than Houllier could.

I'm pleased that Steven Gerrard has decided to stay and give Benitez time before deciding to move on. I also don't think we've seen the best of the two new players yet - Harry Kewell and Steve Finnan. I prefer to see Kewell out on the left personally.

Benitez will bring in some new players I'm sure. I think we lacked confidence last season. Apart from Gerrard we didn't have anyone who could take the game by the scruff of the neck, and that is what we need if we want to be challenging for the title.

As for Djibril Cisse - I've not seen enough of him to comment as yet, so I'd prefer to pass judgement on him until he arrives.
