Liverpool Football Club: Season Review

Last updated : 22 May 2008 By LFC Online
Who has been your best player this season?
Without doubt Liverpool's star man this season has been Fernando Torres. With a £26.5m price tag he was under huge pressure to deliver, but he's done it in style.

Who would you be glad to see the back of?
Harry Kewell. The 07/08 season was supposed to be an opportunity for him to remind us all why he was still at Liverpool, but as usual he has spent most of it on the treatment table. His groin must be made of paper.

What was your best performance?
The 4-2 Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Arsenal. Yet another classic European night at Anfield. six minutes from time we were out of the tournament but the 'never say die' attitude kicked in and we came back to clinch it.

And the worst?
Losing to Barnsley in the FA Cup. We had already made life difficult for ourselves against Havant and Waterlooville in the previous round and bad tactics on the day let us down.

Who have been your toughest opponents?
Has to be Man United. We were unfortunate in both games this season, but they were good enough to punish us.

Best individual faced?
Didier Drogba caused us so many problems in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge. Rafael Benitez's criticism of his theatrics in the first leg only spurred him on even more and we paid the price.

Funniest/most bizarre moment of the season?
Steven Gerrard grabbing the football from Avram Grant during the Champions League tie at Stamford Bridge, and in doing so pushing him back into the dugout. Priceless.

Your perfect, but realistic, signing in summer?
Valencia's David Silva is top of Rafa's list in the summer as long as he's not overpriced.

Any reasons to be cheerful going into next season?
We ended the season on a high note, secured fourth comfortably and will be looking to go all the way to Rome in the Champions League.

Reasons to be gloomy?
Ownership issues still threaten to disrupt the club, with Tom Hicks refusing to budge and trying to block George Gillett's exit. Expect changes at the top before the new season starts.

Who will you be supporting in Euro 2008?
The obvious answer is Spain. I believe that Torres will set the tournament alight and they will go on to finally win something.

Overall assessment of your manager?
Benitez has had a difficult season, dealing with backroom troubles while trying to get the best from his team. At times he has been too public in his criticism of events at the club, but things appear to have settled down in recent months. He's made some very strange tactical changes which have often backfired, but hopefully he is learning from those mistakes.

And overall assessment of team?
A disappointing Premier League season, with Liverpool unable to keep up the pace with the top three. More consistency and a few more big signings are needed if we are to challenge in 08/09.

Marks out of 10?
A positive 7, although improvements are needed next season.
