Liverpool set to sign defender Danny Wilson from Rangers

The talented 18-year-old was injured in a bounce game with Celtic on Tuesday and is likely to miss what's left of the SPL campaign - but his future remains a hot topic.

A projected £3million transfer has been the subject of preliminary talks between the Glasgow and Merseyside clubs after Rafa Benitez set his sights on the youngster.

Rangers still hope Wilson, who has 14 months left on his existing deal, will accept a new contract that would increase any future fee for his services. But Sportsmail has learned that one idea being floated is for the player to be loaned back to Ibrox during his first season at Liverpool.

It could prove an attractive proposition, because even though central defender Andy Webster will be back in Govan next season following his successful loan spell at Dundee United, there is no guarantee that skipper David Weir will return for another season after his 40th birthday.

Madjid Bougherra's appearance at this summer's World Cup in South Africa could also lead to lucrative offers and a swift exit for the Algerian centre-back, leaving Smith's men short of cover.

Wilson, who has been nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award, will have a scan today on a muscle problem which could prematurely end a sensational debut campaign in Walter Smith's first team and see him miss out on playing his part in a potential title party at Easter Road this Sunday.
