Liverpool v Southampton - Match Preview

Last updated : 15 August 2014 By Kurt Ellis

Our first match of the season sees Southampton coming to Liverpool. Southampton have lost no less than six first team players, with Morgan Schneiderlin trying to force a move for himself as well. They are in a transitional period, but Koeman has done some good business over the transfer period, in particular Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand coming in. That being said, I cannot see anything else but a Liverpool win in our first game.

I would like to see Rodgers playing the 4-2-3-1 formation I mentioned earliar. In front of Mignolet, I would like to see Jose Enrique, Lovren, Skrtel and Manquillo. The two deep lying midfielders to be Gerrard with either Can/Henderson/Lucas or Allen. In front of them, I would like to see Sterling, Coutinho and Henderson/Markovic. And leading the line, Sturridge. I think this team would be far too strong for the Saints to stop

And our competitors…

Man United open this season by welcoming Swansea to Old Trafford. Unfortunately, I believe Van Gaal will get his tenure off at Man United with a comfortable win. Everton face a tricky away trip to newly promoted Leicester and Spurs also face a tough London derby test away to West Ham. I can see either one of these two teams dropping points here. Arsenal welcome Crystal Palace to the Emirates in another London derby. A Tony Pulis managed team is going to be a challenge, and I think this will be the true test to see if Alexis Sanchez can make it in the Premier League. Although, Man City and Chelsea are playing away to Newcastle and Burnley respectively, I believe both teams will be too strong and collect all three points.
