Luis Suarez: The Fans' Perspective

Last updated : 09 August 2013 By Steve Beaven

In quotes released last night directly from the horse's mouth, Luis Suarez claimed that Liverpool weren't keeping their promise with regards to selling him if they failed to make Champions League football last season. Incidentally if Luis Suarez hadn't been banned for 20% of the games Liverpool have played since he signed, we might be in a far stronger position to compete in the battle for the top four places. But if Luis Suarez is a man who thinks people should keep to their promises; how about this promise he made six months ago in an interview with the Daily Mail?

'But I want to say now that, if you want to know what will happen to me if we don't qualify for the Champions League, then I will say this: I have a contract with Liverpool and I am very happy here. I will stay.'

Interesting that a man who made this promise to the fans six months ago is now claiming the hierarchy at Liverpool have broken some sort of verbal agreement to let him leave if we didn't finish in the top four. So, Luis, which is it? Are you lying about the verbal agreement or did you lie to the millions of Liverpool fans that have had your back from day one?

Throughout my 20 odd years as a Liverpool fan, I've never come across such a divisive character in football. I'd always made excuses for Suarez's on-field behaviour in the tribal manner that is so common of football fans these days, by saying that it was his sheer desire to win on the field that made him lose his wits; leading to several indiscretions that led to bans in his short Liverpool career. However last night, did we see his true side? He claims that he is even with the Liverpool fans after they backed him by repaying them by scoring goals. He seems to have forgotten that he has been handed a multi-million pound contract for doing so. I think bridges have finally been well and truly burnt. Personally, I can't see any way back for the striker at Liverpool now so the next move is an absolutely crucial one. If the hierarchy back down and sell him to Arsenal for the £40m plus £1 derisory bid then I will be beyond disappointed. While I think it's imperative that we get Suarez off the books - it has to be a move that still benefits the club. Selling him to the Emirates side would kill off our top four chances before the season has even started and selling him for half of what the rumoured figures are for Welsh international Gareth Bale is an insult to the club.

I completely accept that Suarez needs to be playing at the highest level and I think most right minded fans wouldn't begrudge the Uruguayan a move to one of the world's elite sides such as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich; but it seems that none of these sides are interested in taking on a player with such a chequered past, despite his incredible talent.

With these recent quotes from Liverpool, and today's totally out of order quotes from the PFA about "helping Suarez to leave Liverpool", the club have been stuck between a rock and a hard place. The hierarchy need to make the correct decision here and I have faith that they will.

As a club, we need to move on from his time at the club and give the support to the players who fully deserve it such as the aforementioned Gerrard. With Daniel Agger claiming he will remain a Liverpool player for as long as he is wanted - this is the sort of character we need to build the club around. Players of the character of Luis Suarez in this world will come and they will go but it's the Steven Gerrards of this world that will always be remembered - and in 10 years' time when Luis retires from playing, how many people will have turned up to his testimonial?
