My Worst Premiership Liverpool XI - Part 1

Last updated : 14 October 2013 By Iain Brown

To create such a scenario, imagine an alternative universe, where each team will be rewarded for the inadequacies of their performances. Every Premier League team comes together to put forward their worst possible sides since the Premier Leagues inception, the players are unaware but each manager has the desire to finish bottom of this mythical league.

I have no doubt that if we had to guarantee one defeat after another then this fine selection of Anfield failures wouldn’t let me down.
This is not only a worst eleven but also a considered 4-4-2 formation of Liverpool’s poorest from 1992 to the present day. It’s taken much deliberation and many a reminding nightmare.

It’s harder to be consistently poor over a long period but some of this eleven managed it with aplomb. If you love your football and Liverpool Football Club in particular, then this article will conjure up some very disturbing images, for that I can only apologise.

1 Goalkeeper – David James

Often in these type of compilations fans will pick players who only played a handful of games but that doesn’t always constitute failure and poor ability. In goal I could suggest Charles Itandje or the wonderfully named Pegguy Arphexad. However both rarely played and in Arphexads case he has the incredible statistic of only appearing six times and leaving Anfield with six winners’ medals!

Therefore I’m choosing a keeper who never made me feel relaxed or assured in his ability at any point. When your nick names Calamity then the suggestion of disaster permanently lingers in the air. Standing 6 ft. 4 ½ you would have expected him to be comfortable in catching a ball from a cross or corner. He wasn’t and made a number of errors in many key matches. Bizarrely he attributed those mistakes to an excessive addiction. Not drugs, alcohol or women, no, playing computer games late into the night which in turn affected his concentration. What hurts the most is that Brad Friedel was moved on and James retained.

Part 2 coming very soon...
