We awoke this morning to news that Philippe Countinho has signed a new five-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2022.

The deal is said to be worth £150,000 per week for the Brazilian playmaker, but what is of more significance is that there is no release clause inserted.

That means we won't see a repetition of the Luis Suarez fiasco that prevented Liverpool blocking a £75m move to Barcelona a year after the Uruguayan signed a contract extension.

Despite recent rumours of interest by Paris St Germain and previous rumblings about a possible move to Barcelona, Coutinho appears happy to stick with the Reds and fight for domestic and European success under Jurgen Klopp.

“I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it’s a great honour for me,” he said.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract here. It is a club that I am very grateful to and this shows my happiness here. I will work much harder to repay the belief shown in me.

“It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms by everyone at the club and the supporters right from my first day. I am very thankful to this football club for everything.”

It's great news for those of us worried about reading the back pages for fewar of another transfer rumour story. It puts to bed all those links, at least for a while, and allows us to focus on the most important thing - the football.
