Olympiakos preview

The trip to the port city of Piraeus will provide Rafa Benitez’s men the chance to rectify their poor away record so far this season.

Olympiakos will be playing their first European home game in the new 33,000-seater Karaiskaki stadium.

The most recent meeting between the two clubs saw Liverpool knock out Olympiakos on the way to winning the UEFA Cup in 2001.

Both teams have made positive starts to their European campaign with Olympiakos winning their first point against Deportivo.

The teams have undergone changes tactically and personnel-wise since their last meeting.

Olympiakos coach Dusan Bajevic prefers his team to play a defensive counter attacking system similar to one employed by Greece.

The main threat to Liverpool’s goal will be from set pieces where Rivaldo will be a big threat.

Harry Kewell has travelled to Greece hoping to get back in the first team but the emergence of the impressive Stephen Warnock has give Rafa Benitez a positive selection dilemma.

Liverpool’s central pairing of Hamann and Alonso will have to provide protection from the deep-lying forwards employed by Olympiakos.

Rafa Benitez knows that a win in Greece will give them an excellent chance of progression in the Champions League.

Liverpool are capable of getting a positive result away from home provided they are able to quieten the hostile home crowd.

A win in Greece would be a big step and Liverpool have the players to win there.

Prediction: Away win 2-1
