Putting Your Foot In It

At the start of the season Didi Hamann came out and proclaimed that Liverpool had the squad to challenge for the league, as long as we could keep all our major players free from injuries, what a curse of death that was. Especially as a matter of days later he, himself became the first of many.

Before the Southampton match and again before the Spurs match, Gerard Houllier came out in overly confident mood and stated that third place was a possibility, never mind the “minimum” of fourth. Lo and behold both times we lose again by the score line, which has been the bane of our season, 2-1.

So please could the players and staff at LFC please let their results do the talking and not create rods for their own backs by creating what appears to be false hope amongst supporters.

Maybe I’m being superstitious or something, but isn’t it strange that Harry Kewell scores consolation goals against the Mancs, Arsenal and Spurs while our main “strikers” can’t hit a barn door. Meanwhile across the channel it appears that a certain Djibril Cisse seems to be banging goals in for fun, especially on days when we have lost. When Arsenal were leaving Anfield with three points, he got a hat trick. When the Mancs robbed us he got a brace, yesterday he got the second in a two-nil away win at Strasbourg, (why does that name ring a bell?). Is he trying to tell us something?

Which leads me to Emile. Should he stay or should he go? Not until the end of the season at least, in my opinion and what happens if we sell Emile and finish fifth? Does Michael Owen go to Chelski? Does Owen stay and walk away on a free the following season? It strikes me as strange, that both Owen and Heskey have similar amounts of time on their contracts, yet all we ever hear about is Owen this or Owen that. Do we keep a prolific striker, when fit, who shows so much disloyalty? Or do we keep a striker who only seems to score goals when he is given a striker’s role rather than being Owen’s provider but doesn’t hold the club to ransom? Something tells me that Owen won’t be around next season no matter what our final league position and we will be left with two big Cisses up front next season. Maybe with less internal disruption and one less big-time Charlie we might actually win the league. Providing no one actually says this out loud.

At least our injured first-teamers are returning to action, so here’s to our next match, against Wolves. At least they haven’t had any good results lately, DOH!!!!
