Strange Season

Last updated : 05 May 2009 By Madeiran Red
We looked liked the best team in the league at the start of the season, only to have a dull, poor period half way through, then to go on to what we're doing now, scoring for fun (Albeit with a little show of weakness at the back.)

Will we win a trophy this season? Not likely perhaps. An almost second string side knocked out of the Carling cup by a Spurs side who were just starting to find their feet. Then out of the FA cup by the bitters after a typically gritty performance by them. Followed that up with going out of the Champions League due largely to our poor performance in the home leg.

We have drawn 11 games. Amazingly 7 of those were at home. We have been unable to break down Stoke on 2 occaisions, we lost to a terrible Middelsborough and have struglled against other teams who stack 11 men behind the ball.

We have 9 more points to play for. We could end the season with 86 points, with only 2 losses and still not the win the league.

Torres in and out of the side due to injuries. Gerrard picking up some niggly ones and missing some big games too.

All of the above, are basically the ingrediants for a recipe for a season of dissapointment. So why dont I feel dissapointed?

I'll tell you why. Football matches like the one against Portsmouth, Arsenal, hull and Man City amongst others in the league, including the one we somehow lost at Spurs. Taking 6 points off of United and Chelsea in the leauge, not scrapping for the points, but actually taking them by the force of our football.

That match against Arsenal. What a game. We were poor at the back , but that was undoubtebly brought on by how much we wanted to go forward and get our goals.

The way we reacted in the second leg against Chelsea in the second leg was one of my proudest moments as a fan of our great club. The drubbings of both United and Madrid in their own back yards showed me exactly what we are capable off.

At the start of the season I asked for a challenge. We are getting one and I am loving every minute. But I believe when we asked for a challenge, we were asking for somthing else. That something is belief. Belief that we are actually a force to be reckoned with and not just an also ran. Belief that we are taking the correct steps forward, closer to the trophy we have been waiting for for all those years.

The players have given us a challenge, but more importantly they have given us belieif. I'm proud of our boys for what they have done this season. For the way they have reacted and when needed too and pushed to the last minute for that result. No dissapointment.

What a season!
