At the centre of our team we have Steven Gerrard who is arguably the most important signing of the summer. He is the driving force in the side and looks to be pretty much running things in the national team now. Beside him we have Danny Murphy who was voted our best player last season on the official site. Behind them is Dietmar Hamann who despite often being overlooked has been one of our most important and consistent performers since he joined the club.

The team always look weaker when he is missing. However, that’s three players into two places and I haven’t even mentioned Diao and Biscan. The only way to accommodate these players is by occasionally putting them on the flanks which is clear to everyone as a flawed policy. Houllier has to buy attacking midfielders this summer or the fans are going to loose patience.

The most popular option is Duff. At £15M he is also the most expensive choice and we know the boss doesn’t like spending too much money. I believe we are set to offer a reduced amount plus a selection of players that Souness may choose one from. It all seems a bit half arsed and we either have to make a serious bid or forget it.

The word on Malbranque seems to have gone quiet. I would have thought that at £3M he would represent an offer too good to miss. He is a talented attacking midfielder with Premiership experience.

I believe players like Smicer and Biscan would be sold for the right price but what are the chances of getting decent offers?

It’s possible a top player like Hamann could be let go in order to fund purchases such as Duff. Although we would be losing a good player, it would be a swap from defence to attack and that has to be a step in the right direction.

Finally, a word on Cheyrou. He has become a scapegoat for last years effort but I believe he has a lot to offer. He got thrown in the deep end last year and was given the job of rescuing our season. He looks to have some nice touches and could be a real attacking option for us net season.
