That Was The Week Then Was It?

Three goals in freezing conditions in Moscow and another, from the penalty spot, at Anfield on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to grab the headlines in the press.

That's pretty good going for someone the press labelled 'burnt-out' only a couple of weeks ago?

It seems that Michael Owen is the only Premiership striker who the media get cdoncerned about when he is not scoring. Fortunately they have not been able to criticise much recently.

So if he scored four in the last seven days he must be headline news then?

No, that honour has been given to a tubby, spotty adolescent from across the park called Wayne Rooney.

Has he scored even more?

No, he hasn't scored this week, but he did end Arsenal's running streak last week.

So this Rooney kid - how many has he scored this season?

Apart from the goal against Arsenal he's only managed another two, against top quality opposition.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle?

Wrexham.

Not the stuff of dreams exactly is it?

David Moyes seems to think so, yet the kid has only managed one full game for the club this season. The boss is scared of burning him out.

What does the future hold?

Gary Lineker believes Owen and Rooney will become England's future strike-force. All we need is to get FIFA to reduce games to 30 minutes each way and maybe kick-off fixtures a little earlier to allow young Rooney to get home and in bed for school the next day.
