That Was The Week Then Was It?

In the last two years Liverpool have produced a strong run in to the season and we are going to need a similar effort this time around. The vital signs are positive with six goals in two games, Owen, Murphy and Gerrard on top form and a renewed confidence after a season of jitters. However, there are still signs of trouble and these will definitely have to be addressed in the summer.

Firstly, what happened to the team after 20 minutes against Leeds? We were 2-0 up and could have easily buried them with another goal or two before half-time. Leeds were on the ropes and looked like they wanted to go home. Instead of delivering the killer blow, we sat back and waited for them to recover. They had enough confidence in the second half to command a decent slice of the game and always looked like scoring a second. Although it was a comfortable win in the end, this game could have ruined our Champions League hopes.

Secondly, we still seem to only employ one goal scorer. If Riise, Gerrard and Murphy are vying for second highest scorer then something is wrong. I do like Heskey but a centre forward has to score goals. It is frustrating to have Baros and Mellor on the bench when Heskey is missing chances, or worse still, never being anywhere near the box when crosses come in.
