That Was The Week Then Was It?

He said, ‘…next year we will go for the title.’ Those were very comforting words as I thought we might be aiming for 5th spot next season. In defence of our German midfielder, footballers are forced to answer very predictable questions with often dull answers.

Were they to say anything interesting it would be twisted and reported out of all context. Imagine the reporter asking Didi whether he thought Real Madrid or Manchester United would win in the Champions League quarter final.

Now imagine Didi says he believes Real are likely to win. The headline would read, ‘Hamann says useless United don’t have a prayer against mighty Real Madrid’.

What is the point in having interviews with footballers? They cannot say what they really think and it makes for very dull viewing. Especially when you’ve spent an hour downloading the interview from the official website!

With there not being any football this week, I would like to take this opportunity to extend best wishes to the soon to be departed Patrik Berger.

He joined Liverpool after having reached the European Championship final with the Czech Republic in 1996. Paddy scored twice at Filbert Street before registering a hat-trick against Chelsea in his first start for the side.

The all action style Paddy was fond of was always exciting to watch, not to mention his blistering left foot shots he would dispatch whenever he saw goal. He looked on his way out of the club until Houllier came along and resurrected his time at Anfield. Gerard had him tearing about more than ever and even got him defending for the team.

It was whilst doing this that Paddy’s career was effectively ended at Leeds, when he twisted his knee trying to prevent Mark Viduka scoring one of the four he out past us that day.

Paddy has suffered with that injury since and looks to have played his last game for the club.

A few memories you might recall are a free kick at Old Trafford, the pass to Michael Owen to score the second against Arsenal in the FA Cup Final and my favourite, a thirty yard rocket in a 3-3 draw with Charlton at Anfield.
