The Once And Future King

Five different managers have left Liverpool since Kenny left us. For various reasons, not one of them has ultimately proven the right man to bring the title back to Liverpool once, yet alone on the regular basis that we as fans had got used to when Kenny first became manager.

And although the last season of Rafa's tenure, and of course this season is not the first time tha one of Kenny's successors has taken the club backwards (the name Graeme Souness comes to mind here!). Both Rafa and Roy have taken LFC further down the path of mediocrity then we have ever been before in my lifetime.

Kenny returns as manager at a time when Liverpool have their worst squad in living memory. Certainly we have world class performers in Reina,Torres,Gerrard, & Carragher. But the rest of the squad are mostly average at best. And in at least one case (Konchesky), some of the very worst to ever wear the red shirt.

True a certain pair of American businessmen, that I will not dignify by naming here, share the blame for our current malise. Perhaps even most of the blame for our plight can be sent their way. But Rafa and Roy played their part as well that no one can doubt.

It is now obvious to pretty much everyone that Roy Hodgson was NEVER the right man to manage Liverpool FC. He was a stop gap, brought in by you know who, as no other sensible candidate would have taken the job on when Roy did.

It is true that Roy had a very hard task to take on when he arrived. A poor squad to take over, virtually no money for signings and the damoclean sword of the ownership issue hanging over the club. But nine defeats before Christmas, a negative goal difference and a total lack of cohesion told it's own story. Quite simply Roy had to go before LFC became involved in a fight against relegation.

So now, the King sits on his throne once again, and all is right with the world. Well not quite. The squad is of course still the same at time of writing and the two defeats since Kenny returned have hardly helped out situation.

But the man who I still believe was not the right choice in the summer is the right man for the job now. No other potential candidate for LFC manager knows this club better than Kenny does, and no-one else could have given us the instant boost as supporters that Kenny has. His job is incredibly tough and doubts will always linger because of the way he left last time around. However, HE is back and we can celebrate The Return Of The King. Only time will yell whether The King is the man to take us back to our perch once again, but he's certainly the right man to take us out of are current malise and get us on the right path again
