The Sweetest Of Ironies

Last updated : 02 August 2009 By Ryan Ross
The football world has confessed to being shocked at Owen's move to the red side of Manchester; a former Liverpool 'hero' and icon, swapping allegiances would seem morally wrong to any outsiders. Yet despite this, Liverpool fans have far more reason to be excited by the return of "King Kenny" to Anfield.

Kenny Dalglish is widely recognised as Liverpool's greatest ever player, he is an idol and inspiration to thousands, and as a player he not only won countless trophies, but also became manager of the club and enjoyed success.

Owen became a star of the Liverpool team of the late 90's. He shot to fame with his mazy run and goal against Argentina in World Cup 98. He went on to enjoy success at Anfield before leaving to join the 'Galacticos' of Real Madrid in 2005.

Michael Owen never quite 'clicked' with the Liverpool fans; there is a feeling that he always 'belonged' to England rather than LFC, after his World Cup 98 exploits. He was often expected to live up to the adoration which Robbie Fowler enjoyed from the Kopites, and this just wasn't possible. The relationship was damaged further when Owen decided to move onto Madrid to "win trophies;" irony again plays a role as he looked on as Steven Gerrard lifted the Champions League trophy in Istanbul.

Due to all this, most Liverpool fans will wish Owen luck at Man United, but won't want him to score against us!

The return of Dalglish is much more significant to the future of LFC however. His new role in the Academy and as Global Ambassador will ensure Liverpool's link with its past will continue into the future. His previous experience as manager of the club will ensure that he will know when Benitez will feel it necessary to ask for his opinion, but also when it isn't. Dalglish can be used to lure youngsters to the club, and stamp onto them the impression of just what it means to play for Liverpool.

Even the foreign youngsters will know of Dalglish and will be awed by his presence, subsequently; his role on their training each day will ensure that a new generation of 'Gerrards and Carraghers" will come through.

It may also be vital to a title challenge from the first team for the Premier League title. Dalglish was the last Liverpool manager to win a League campaign, and has also won the 'Premier League' with Blackburn; he has been toe-to-toe with Ferguson and bettered him. Benitez should look to the example Dalglish left when was manager, but more importantly, Benitez now has an ace up his sleeve when it comes to dealing with Ferguson's 'notorious mind-games.' If Ferguson decides to resume the games early this season, it will surely be a sign that he's worried. Not only does he now have a realistic threat coming from Liverpool from the title, Benitez has Dalglish for back up. It was all very embarrassing for Ferguson when he had to use Sam Allardyce to "bully" Rafa in the media; the same will no longer happen as Benitez will have the nous of Dalglish to advise him on how to deal with Fergie.

Whilst Owen may score a few goals for United next season, it is no comparisons to the effect Dalglish can have upon Liverpool's title challenge. Whether it's from advising Benitez as to how to handle Ferguson's mind games, or developing the future stars of the club at the Academy; the future is bright for LFC with King Kenny sitting atop his throne.
