Time running out for Bellamy

Take the positives first: the goal on his Liverpool debut against Maccabi Haifa last August and further strikes against Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, two of his former clubs, the award of the Wales captaincy and the goal and assist at the Nou Camp that went a long way towards eliminating Barcelona in the Champions League.

Then consider the more unsavoury incidents: the alleged golf club attack on John Arne Riise during a training camp in Portugal that resulted in him being christened "Bellamy: The Nutter with the Putter" and the court case in which he was cleared of assaulting a teenaged girl in a Cardiff nightclub in March last year.

So has Bellamy done enough to earn himself at least another season at Anfield as Rafael BenÍtez prepares to wield the axe in the summer with the promise of a hefty transfer kitty from George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks, the new owners?

Nine goals in 36 appearances is a modest return on a £6 million investment and the feeling that time might be running out for the striker seemed to grow last night.

Barely 15 minutes had elapsed when Bellamy was taken off on a stretcher with a jarred knee, but while the injury is unlikely to keep him out for a significant length of time, it is an inopportune blow. The striker will have a scan today. "It doesn't seem serious but we won't know until he has a scan," BenÍtez said.

But while the future for one Liverpool forward appeared uncertain, for another, Peter Crouch, life could not be better. His winning goal against PSV Eindhoven last night ensured a semi-final meeting with Chelsea, his boyhood heroes.

"It's going to be a special occasion for myself, my family and everyone connected with Liverpool," he said. "We have had that tie before and let's hope it's the same outcome.

"All the boys are hungry for it again. We have seen what a special occasion the final is and I want to get there for the first time. Tonight was a job well done more than a spectacle. I've been pleased with my form in the Champions League. Hopefully, I can keep it going."
