We Go Again

Once again there were a lot of ups and downs which had fans from across the globe left on the edge of their seat, experiencing an array of feelings, as we watched the players live out these emotions out on the pitch. Due to a head injury, Mamadou Sakho was taken off in the first half where fans could then see the player covering himself under his coat, inconsolable through disappointment.

Aguero was the main threat of the day and proved why he is such a sought after player as Fernandinho scored past Mignolet during the second half putting Liverpool in hot water. One consolation for Liverpool fans is that Sterling managed to do very little impressive during the match, despite having a couple of greedy shots.

I would have to say out of the red squad, I would have nominated Lucas or Coutinho as one of our strongest players on the day, showing true passion and determination on the day I do not think anyone can question their dedication to the team.

Emre Can was the only successful penalty taker as Lucas, Coutinho and Lallana all failed to put goals past City’s Caballero. Whilst Mignolet managed to save Fernandinho’s attempted penalty, he failed to save shots by Navas, Aguero and Toure.

Despite the result, the match did offer greater reflection on the team as the performance itself was a huge improvement on previous games and you could see the want and determination in the players. Skipper Henderson felt the team gave their all and it was all he could have asked for of his fellow team mates, however he still apologised to fans for a disappointing final.

“We would like to say sorry for not winning the game and we are very disappointed, but at the same time I am very proud of my teammates because I felt as though we gave everything. To lose on penalties is bitterly disappointing but someone has got to win. Henderson believes in extra time the red men really showed their strength and were could have got the win then.

Emotions were riding high after the penalty shootout with Coutinho dropping to the floor, Sturridge could be seen distraught collecting the runners up medal. Jurgen Klopp believes it is always disappointing to lose any cup final no matter how it was lost. Liverpool will of course face Manchester City on Wednesday at Anfield as the manager understands we have to carry on “You can fall down but you have to stand up and we have the next chance on Wednesday.”

Manuel Pellegrini is now set to potentially win the treble as he announced his plans to depart from the club in February at the end of the season.
