Window of opportunity?

So perhaps an advertisement for selling a car in the Auto Trader would mention; excellent condition inside and out or an overall very comfortable and smooth drive, to take one or two examples.

Now my initial thought was one of shock when reading Gerard Houllier's comments on Emile Heskey in the official website earlier this week.

"He is strong, quick, has a good touch, two good feet and he can score goals. He can be unstoppable," Houllier said "There is no doubt in my mind he has all the ingredients to become one of the best strikers in Europe."

But think about what he said, and think about why he said it. I just wonder whether Ged is actually, in a subtle way, talking up the qualities, which the Liverpool AND England striker possesses, (however has not been witnessed on a consistent basis during his time at Anfield) in the hope of a summertime scramble for his services.

It comes as no coincidence that his comments come after a week of speculation surrounding an alleged £5m bid from Middlesborough, and, maybe, just maybe, if it wasn't for the reluctance of Auxerre letting their main man go six months early, then Emile would be on his way this month??..I think definitely! The problem is that when summer comes Heskey will have 12 months left on his contract, which will inevitably lower his value, hence, Houllier's recent comments.

I, like Gerard have spent a lot of time and a lot of energy defending and persevering with Heskey (Gerard with the press, me with my mates in the pub) but my mates will tell you that my patience with him this season has slowly ran out.

The decisive moment in Emile Heskey's Liverpool career came when he failed to keep hold of the ball in the last 20 seconds of the game against Man City, and made no attempt to win it back, for City to go up the other end and equalise with the last kick of the game. That for me was the last straw! And judging from Thommo's reactions on the sidelines it was the last straw for him too.

But then, what happens? He comes off the bench and changes the game against Yeovil, and then puts in a MOTM performance against Chelsea. Methinks someone has been having words, and ones to very big effect. Only time will tell.

So the long term future of Emile Heskey's Liverpool career is up for question, but then again, so is the long term future of a number of personnel at Anfield. So much depends on what happens between now and May.

Lastly, Jamie Carragher should be returning soon. I was one that said we would never win the league with him in our side, and I will stand corrected and admit I was wrong and say, we will never win the league WITHOUT him in our side.

Welcome back JC, you don't know what you've got till it's gone!
