Fernando Morientes

Fernando Morientes was Raul's strike partner at Real Madrid before the arrival of Ronaldo. Since then his first team opportunities have been limited and after a successful loan spell at Monaco, it was clear his days at the Bernabeu were numbered.

Rafael Benitez was keen to sign his fellow countryman since arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2004, and finally got his man for £6.3m in January 2005.

Unfortunately Morientes was unable to adapt to the faster, more physical Premier League and managed only 12 goals in 61 appearances before being sold to Valencia in the summer of 2006.
