Mauricio Pellegrino is a tough-tackling defender, strong in the air and an excellent man-marker.

He established himself as a talented defender at CA Valez Sarsfield in Argentina before moving on to Barcelona on loan in 1998, making 23 appearances to help them win La Liga.

A season later he returned to Spain, this time to Valencia, forging an impressive pairing with fellow Argentinian, Roberto Ayala.

He joined Liverpool on a free transfer for the second half of the 2005/06 season, before returning to Spain. He later returned to Anfield as first team coach in 2008.

In Spain Pellegrino is nicknamed 'El Flaco', meaning skinny, but back in Argentina, he is called 'El longanizas' - the name of a long pork sausage!
