Five days after defeat by Manchester United in the FA Cup Liverpool were off to the Eternal City in a bid to overcome Borussia Moenchengladbach and claim their first European Cup.

The stadium was awash with Red as over 30,000 fans had made the journey. It was to be Kevin Keegan's final appearance as he looked forward to a move to Hamburg, and Tommy Smith's as he declared his intention to retire after the game.

Terry McDermott scored the opening goal of the game on 27 minutes after good work from Steve Heighway on the wing, but the Germans pulled one back after the interval with a goal from their Danish star Allan Simonsen.

Liverpool soaked up the pressure and Ray Clemence produced some quality saves to keep the Reds in the game. After 65 minutes Heighway forced a corner and Tommy Smith rose to head hte ball into the net to give Bob Paisley's side the lead.

Berti Vogts then brought down Keegan in the area and Phil Neal calmly slotted in the penalty to seal the victory.

Five hundred million people throughout the world witnessed Liverpool's victory on television.

As players and fans celebrated long into the night Bob Paisley refused to have a drink. "I just want to stay sober and savour the atmosphere," he said.
