The Scottish side took a shock lead at Pittodrie through Australian striker David Zdrilic, but the arrival of a his more illustrious compatriot , as well as England's finest in Owen and Gerrard, saw a respectable half-time score of 1-1 turn into a humiliating 5-1 thrashing for the hosts.

Paterson said: "We hung in there in the first half - but when they brought on the likes of Michael Owen, Harry Kewell and Steven Gerrard we couldn't live with them.

"Their movement, pace and finishing was far too good for us. I'm disappointed to lose 5- 1 but we were up against class. We were taught a footballing lesson in the second half but one of their players makes more money in a week than our whole squad. But I was disappointed with aspects of our defending."
